Is Cigarette Smoking a Sin?

It is. But first, here are some important facts about smoking cigarette tobaccos:

It is addictive. Smoking leads to nicotine dependence which will require medical help or treatment for those who would later want to quit. The earlier you quit the better.

It is destructive. It is a cause of disease, disability and harm to almost every part of the body. Cigarette tobacco has about 7,000 deadly chemical mix. If you are smoking it, you are ingesting poison in exchange for nicotine pleasure.

It is death. It causes about 6 Million deaths world wide per year and it is projected to increase to 8 Million by year 2030.

It has no health benefits. You will reap any health benefits when you quit smoking.

Therefore, for being addictive and destructive, smoking cigarette tobacco can be classified as one of the evils the world has to offer. And those who call themselves “reformed” or those who call themselves “born again” should be the number one preachers against smoking in their churches.

Of all people, they should be leading in the reformation of any deadly habits. As Rom 12:9  puts it,

“Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”

The Bible may not be the handbook of all evils in the world but it gives us godly principles and expects us to use our common sense to apply those principles.

The Bible doesn’t have to say smoking is evil. There is no record of early Christians smoking so don’t expect this issue addressed in Scriptures. But time and time again, scientific and medical studies have proven the evils of cigarette smoking. So if you are a Christian and you are still smoking, quit now and seek medical help.

Also 1 Cor. 6:12 says,

“All things are lawful for me,but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.”

Smoking enslaves its victims. For having no benefits whatsoever those who smoke only gratifies the lust of their sinful nature.

So why not quit now and seek help? The body is not meant for cigarette smoking. You were bought with a price. Glorify God in your body instead by giving up smoking (1 Cor. 6:20). It is God’s temple, stop destroying it (1 Cor. 3:17).
