Top Ten Yom Kippur Fallacies of 2012

No eating, no sex, no leather shoes and must wear white!

This year, the Intercessors For the Philippines (IFP) celebrates “Yom Kippur” for a second time. But in departure from their last year’s celebration, they post a short treatise on the purpose of their Yom Kippur Fast implicitly denying what their prophet Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj declared last year fasting for day-to-day sins, please see also my Ten Questions to Sadhu. This is year they turn to Jill Shannon, this is how she explains it as posted by IFP in their Facebook page,

The Day of Atonement has the following purposes as written by Jill Shannon in her book, “A Prophetic Calendar”:

1) The Day of Atonement speaks of sanctification, a lifestyle in which our flesh comes into alignment with our spirit. It calls the Bride to a life of discipline and purpose, in which we understand the seriousness of our sins and what they cost the Lord. We are required to love Him more than we love our own flesh and pleasures, our own bank accounts, and even our own family members. This is part of living the sanctified life and the crucified life.

2) The Day of Atonement is a sacred memorial, a holy memory that we observe by fasting and doing no regular work. No one should attempt to offer the sacrifices of atonement for sin on this earth. It has been made by Jesus. It is finished. The atonement is complete and permanent. It is important for both Jewish people and Christians to understand that we are not fasting to atone for our sins. The Lord sees and rewards the Yom Kippur fast, but it simply cannot atone for sin.

3) If a Gentile believer chooses to fast on Yom Kippur, it will often be as a) a sign of solidarity and identification with the Jewish people; b) to intercede for deliverance from their enemies, and; c) for their spiritual salvation. There is a serious blessing for those Gentiles who willingly fast on this day that is extremely holy to the Lord. While Passover celebrates our individual salvation, the Day of Atonement represents a day of Israel’s national salvation. This national salvation is comprised of millions of individual Jewish people who have recognized the identity of their Jewish Messiah.

4) The Day of Atonement for Israel as a nation, is still a future event. There are tens of thousands who believe, even hundreds of thousands, but on that day, there will be millions. This holiest of days is a rehearsal for the salvation of the nation of Israel. Let us intercede for Israel as we fast on this day.

And this is from Leviticus 23:26-32,

The LORD said to Moses, “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and PRESENT AN OFFERING made to the LORD BY FIRE. DO NO WORK on that day, because it is the DAY OF ATONEMENT, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day MUST BE CUT OFF from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

Here’s the Top Ten Yom Kippur Fallacies of 2012

1) The Day of Atonement speaks of sanctification, a lifestyle in which our flesh comes into alignment with our spirit.

Yom Kippur vs Romans 12:1-2

Truth to tell, Yom Kippur is not to be our lifestyle. Our lifestyle is to offer our bodies as living sacrifice–not every year though like the Muslims during Ramadan, nor the Roman Catholics during the Holy Week, nor the Jews when approaching Yom Kippur, Christians don’t do penance but they turn away from sin moment by moment.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to OFFER YOUR BODIES AS LIVING SACRIFICES, HOLY AND PLEASING TO GOD–this is your spiritual act of worship.” Romans 12:1

2) It [Yom Kippur] calls the Bride to a life of discipline and purpose, in which we understand the seriousness of our sins and what they cost the Lord.

Yom Kippur vs the Eucharist

It is true that we are to live a life of discipline and purpose but it is through the Lord’s blood and body (the Eucharist) where we understand the seriousness of our sins, see 1 Cor 11:28-31,

“A MAN OUGHT TO EXAMINE HIMSELF before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. BUT IF WE JUDGED OURSELVES, WE WOULD NOT COME UNDER JUDGMENT.” 1 Corinthians 11:28-31

3) This [Yom Kippur] is part of living the sanctified life and the crucified life.

Whenever the Scripture requires the Christian to set himself apart (sanctify), it does so without any reference to Yom Kippur. Here is one example…

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”? Romans 12:2

4) The Day of Atonement is a sacred memorial, a holy memory that we observe by fasting and doing no regular work.

Eating vs Fasting

Again the sacred memorial for Christians is not fasting but eating!… eating the Lord’s Supper…

“And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.’ In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.'”?1 Corinthians 11:24-25

5) The Lord sees and rewards the Yom Kippur fast, but it simply cannot atone for sin.

This is another error. While they have contradicted Sadhu’s statement last year when they fasted for day-to-day sins, here, they promise blessings as if the Lord promised to Christian believers who observe the Yom Kippur fast. This is unscriptural because no where do we find the Lord Jesus nor His Apostles assuring Christian believers of rewards for fasting on Yom Kippur.

6) There is a serious blessing for those Gentiles who willingly fast on this day that is extremely holy to the Lord.

Shadow vs Light

Another error (or lie). Making a promise in behalf of the Lord which the Lord did not say. There is no promise of blessing to Christians who willingly fast on the Day of Atonement! In fact “holy days” have been done away with. They foreshadowed Christ. Now that we have Christ, the “holy days” have served their purpose…

“Having CANCELED the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, NAILING IT TO THE CROSS. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. THEREFORE do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL, a New Moon celebration or a SABBATH DAY. These are a SHADOW of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is FOUND IN CHRIST.” Colossians 2:14-17

Don’t live in the shadows, live in the light!!!

7) While Passover celebrates our individual salvation, the Day of Atonement represents a day of Israel’s national salvation.

Another error. The Passover with its rules and regulations, do not celebrate our individual salvation rather it celebration the salvation of the Jews from Egyptian bondage…

“Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time. Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL ITS RULES AND REGULATIONS.” Numbers 9:2-3

“Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover of the LORD your God, BECAUSE IN THE MONTH OF ABIB HE BROUGHT YOU OUT OF EGYPT by night.” Deuteronomy 16:1

Our true Passover is Jesus Christ himself and we keep that proverbial ‘feast’ by getting rid of the metaphorical yeast (malice and wickedness) with metaphorical bread without yeast (sincerity and truth)…

“Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast–as you really are. For CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER LAMB, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of SINCERITY AND TRUTH.” 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

8) The Day of Atonement for Israel as a nation, is still a future event.

Isn’t Jesus the atoning sacrifice for them too? How then it is to be regarded future? They must have Daniel 9:24ff in mind. But even their Pre-Trib Pre-Mill Rapture view placed the death of Jesus predicted in Daniel’s 70 Weeks sometime in 28-33 AD.

9) This holiest of days is a rehearsal for the salvation of the nation of Israel.

Granted the the Pre-Trib, Pre-Mill Rapture View is correct, the salvation of Israel will come as they reach the brink of annihilation, when Christ comes again, visibly from heaven. But he comes to save NOT TO DEAL WITH SINS.

“So Christ was sacrificed ONCE to take away the sins of many people; and he will APPEAR A SECOND TIME, NOT TO BEAR SIN, BUT TO BRING SALVATION to those who are waiting for him.” Hebrews 9:28

10) A sign of solidarity and identification with the Jewish people

Finally, the error of the Zionist movement. Why would Christians be identified with a people majority of whom rejects the Lord Jesus? There are even Jews against Zionism and they tell us that ?what has happened to them was part of the divine judgment and will only be resolved supernaturally by God. These orthodox Jews opposing the Zionist movement puts us all to shame.
